Description:
Dasd Contracting Inc. was retained by UPS as a construction manager for this important project. The facility consisted of a 2-story mezzanine and parcel sorting systems which received deliveries directly from planes offloading at Pearson Airport. Work had to be coordinated on the Airside of the building, requiring enforcement of the facility’s strict security & safety regulations. The sorting terminal had to be fully operational in approximately 2.5 months, and there was absolutely no room for error. Missing the deadline would have serious implications on the logistics of their business. In the initial design, the mezzanine was to be fabricated of red iron. Dasd determined that from scheduling and budgetary perspectives, an engineered heavy gauge stud construction would be beneficial. This was agreed upon and implemented into the project, allowing us to compress the schedule. During tendering, Dasd interviewed prospective sub-trades to ensure they were capable of meeting the strict timelines. Coordination between electrical, mechanical, and conveyance contractors was critical as the lead-time on this highly specialized equipment left little time for the installation on site. Trades worked around the clock and through a concentrated team approach were able to get this project up and running on time, and under budget.
